Siyafundisa HIV/AIDS in Africa program adds peer-to-peer component to its curriculum

Peer-to-peer training sessions (right) are being implemented to spread the HIV/AIDS prevention message to thousands of youth in South Africa, Mozambique and Namibia.

Siyafundisa, FreshMinistries’ HIV/AIDS in Africa initiative providing youth education on HIV/AIDS prevention in South Africa, Namibia and Mozambique recently added “Aribuisanenge”, a peer-to-peer educational program developed in partnership with the Harvard-Southern Africa Peer Education Support Initiative of the Harvard School of Public Health, to its curriculum. Aribuisaneng’s life skills & healthy choice message compliments the established Siyafundisa prevention message and works within the Anglican Church network to implement its Abstinence and Be Faithful and complimentary life skills lessons to the community. The grass-roots training sessions have taken place in all three target countries. Over the past 4 months 484 Peer Supervisors, Peer Educators and Staff Faciliators have been trained. Once training is complete, the peer educators return to their communities in groups of 3 and train an additional 20 peers each, who in turn train another 20 peers each, creating an ever expanding peer-network-outreach-program able to carry the program’s message to thousands of youth in a short period of time.
