Neighborhood Walk brings attention to waste, dilapidated structures FreshMinistries' Neighborhood Anti-Crime Walk brought Sheriff Rutherford, Councilman Gaffney, JSO patrol officers and community leaders together in Jacksonville's Eastside to promote trust, cooperation and neighborhood unity. But it also brought attention to many areas of the community that needed Jacksonville Code Enforcement's attention.Sheriff Rutherford and residents helped identify 77 places that required attention, including piles of trash and abandoned buildings. "The goal of these walks, of course, is to help build trust between the neighborhood and its police officers in order to weed out crime," said Beverly Toney, director of FreshMinistries' 6-Point Community Initiative. "But it always turns into much more than that." In addition to Code Enforcement's presence, local organizations, including FreshMinistries, notified residents of programs and resources available in their community during the walk, and Eastside Neighborhood Association officers recruited residents for monthly meetings at the East Jacksonville Neighborhood Resource Center. |
