East Jacksonville neighborhood unveils community garden

East Jacksonville's residents got together Saturday afternoon to unveil their new community garden, located at Phelps St. and Spearing St., and to begin the construction of boxes that will contain the garden's plants, most of which will be vegetables.

The garden, an initiative of Operation New Hope, is also the result of the partnership between the residents, the Eastside Neighborhood Assocation and FreshMinistries.

The garden is definitely community-owned, though, stressed FreshMinistries' vice chairman, The Rev. Dr. Bruce Grob.

"We're just here to help bring in outside partnerships to help the garden be more successful," said Dr. Grob.  "The community owns this thing and is the key to its success."

"This is a perfect example of the community taking ownership of its programs and working toward its own success," said Beverly Toney, director of FreshMinistries' 6-Point Community Initiative.  "This is one of the main goals of the 6-Point plan; to become a self-sustaining, community-owned success.  And we're seeing it happen."
